The future of social just might be private

As the digital native generation grows up, they will bring significant changes along with their social habits. It is becoming more clear that teenagers have enjoyed a greater sense of discretion than we think.

What does that privacy mean for the future of social media? And what expectation do they bring along with this approach?

Its hard to avoid all the blogs, tweets and info graphics that show that nearly 80% of teenagers have cell phones, though only 40% of those phones are smart phones. With teenagers sendingĀ 60 texts a day, that means that most are doing socializing one-to-one in a closed loop.

People make a lot of predictions about the future of social media and which platforms teenagers will adopt and use to publically communicate, but is it possible that connecting on a deeper level, in a more specific way will indeed lead to a different social experience for us all.

We know that teenagers are using alternative networks such as Snapchat, Instagram and others, but will they continue to maintain secret interactions via text and IM as they grow into adulthood, and does that mean that they concept of social networking may change? In other words, are we making the right assumptions about how digital natives want to interact?
